The significance of a proper surface

Magnetic particles are broadly applied in both separation processes and in IVD reagents. Selecting a proper type of particles is the key to a successful project. A suitable particle surface leads to a higher specificity and stability for the capture molecule, in which then creates a better binding for the targets. In order to capture the desired targets, the magnetic particles will have to be coated with ligands specifically binding to the targets. Even though these coating techniques are not new to the market, companies have attempted to come out with better ways to improve the coating procedures, i.e. easier handling and binding of capture ligand.

 

It is not difficult to attach a capture molecule on the surface of your particle; however, it could be difficult to have control over the specificity and final orientation of that capture molecule if the surface is not modified with suitable properties, and as a result, lower binding specificity of the targets could occur.

While there various parameters for an appropriate particle that would contribute to the success of an assay, both physically and chemically. (e.g. size or diameter, particle charge, size dispersion, functional groups).
